We had a shorter walk today, but because there were plenty of up and down climbs, it didn’t feel like it! We are still walking on the Alternative Pennine Way. We started from our Inn across the moor in company with sheep, circling several reservoirs, which were lovely in the bright sunshine. We continued towards Holmfirth, which tantalisingly could be seen in the distance from the top of the moor, but our route was a circuitous descent for a long while.
Holmfirth is a very attractive small town (or large village) and we discovered that the long running TV series, ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ was filmed here. We are staying in a self catering cottage for two nights for a rest before heading for the higher peaks of the Pennine Way.

A Backward Glance
Shorter more enjoyable walk today that took us through pastoral areas closer to human habitation. Firstly up through moorland again with associated curlews for company, but also alongside the busy A628. Then around reservoirs where we crossed paths with cyclists and others just walking around; probably shareholders out admiring their liquid assets. From there it was up and down hills through conurbations where we saw dog walkers aplenty, one had six large dogs tethered to her, but where she’d tethered all those essential black plastic bags wasn’t obvious. The end of our walk was down through a planted pine forest then up over steep hills through fields giving us glorious views over all we’d trod earlier. Arrived exhausted at our digs ready for an extended break.
