Day 26: Westhay to Wookey Hole

Today I travelled light, with just the small day pack, as Jane and Tony (David’s sister and brother in law) were due to collect our bags from New House Farm and deliver them to our next accommodation! We started out in rain, but the weather improved during the day and the promised storms didn’t arrive. How I have become obsessed with weather forecasts!

Again we were walking in flat countryside, mainly along ‘droves’ and lanes, just crossing an occasional field on well signed paths. Jane and Tony caught up with us and Jane joined us for the last part of our walk. The four of us met for a pub lunch in a small hamlet called Worth, and later Jane and Tony had dinner with us at our hotel. It was great to spend time with them after several weeks walking in splendid isolation, since saying goodbye to our ‘kids’!

A Backward Glance

It’s official, summer’s been cancelled. By Royal decree I’m told and he’s determined to make his ‘rain’ last as long as possible. So Carol has revised today’s walk to include as much hard paving as she could find between ‘New House Farm’ and ‘Wookey Hole’. It didn’t take long and the thrills of walking in traffic soon paled and the appeal of walking through mud became decidedly preferable. Puddled lanes lead us into even wetter places with small lakes where Great White Egrets were landing and taking off like miniature jumbo jets, while unimpressed resident Swans just floated about heads high. Through a muddy wood then out onto a main road again where the terrifying sight of a banshee, shuffling at speed in slippers through the rain with a violet transparent cape flapping like maddened wings about its head appeared on the opposite side of the B3139 we were on. Then the apparition crossed the road towards us – my sister Jane had arrived! Shortly we met up with Tony, their car and our bags. Jane joined us for the remainder of our walk to ‘Wookey Hole’. On route we met up again with Tony at a pub for a drink and snack, then again at ‘Wookey Hole’ car park where it was decided we should wake him up to have dinner with us. (Sorry Tony, good try though).

Lovely to see Auntie Jane joined you for a bit. Can’t wait to join you in the midlands. Glad the pubs were open. Your walk seems to be peppered with pubs closed or pathways ploughed through. Onwards dum and mad!! X
